Tweaking the Truth with Jon Doust

Date and time: 8th May 2016 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Location: Meeting Room, Salamanca Arts Centre, 77 Salamanca Place, Hobart

How often have you said, or heard someone say, ‘I could never write that story. It would upset too many people’? Jon Doust has written two novels based on his life and the lives of people around him and is currently finishing a third. In Tweaking the Truth, he shows how to start with truths that can’t be told, then tweak and twist them to create a work of fiction that can sometimes reveal deeper truths.

Jon Doust’s first novel, Boy on a Wire, based on his five years in boarding school, was long listed for the 2010 Miles Franklin. His second, To the Highlands, was critically acclaimed. He is now finishing his third – Durban Poison, based on a year he lived in Southern Africa – and has already started his fourth, based on his three years living on an Israeli kibbutz. All novels source Doust’s first thirty years which he says “were insane and I can’t believe I made it through.”

Sorry, this workshop is sold out.
